GT Makerspaces: Catalysts for the Next Generation of Innovators

TechMade Spring 2025 Symposium: Elevating Georgia Tech’s Maker Culture

Friday, April 4th, 2025
11:00AM – 3:00PM
Manufacturing Related Disciplines Complex (MRDC)

Check out what students are making on campus, learn about and how research and activities are conducted in makerspaces, and join the discussion of how to elevate the maker culture across campus! Registration is required for all attendees — students, alumni, judges, faculty, and staff are all welcome to join!

Program

11:00-12:00PM Keynote Speaker, Kai James

Kick off with the keynote speaker, Kai James, an associate professor with the Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech. Hear about Professor James’s recent work on the Historical Innovation of the Wheel, featured on Popular Mechanics and National Geographic.

12:00-1:00PM Lunch and Student Poster Session

The Poster Session highlights student-led design-build projects and physical prototypes. Industry representatives and GT Alumni are invited to judge the poster session, from which top students will be awarded prizes for the best-in-show.

Present your design-build physical prototype and network with industry judges and alumni during the student poster session! Whether you’re a seasoned maker or just starting out, share your physical prototype and show how you’ve brought your design to life. Any level of fidelity is welcome! As a bonus, the best-in-show(s) will be awarded prizes from the $500 prize pool.

During registration, you’ll be asked [1] project title, [2] project description, [3] how much table space you need, and [4] if you need an outlet for your prototype.

1:00-1:45PM Lightning Talks

Learn about Georgia Tech’s makerspaces and associated research and activities happening across campus.

  1. Amit Jariwala with Flowers Invention Studio
  2. Noah Posner with IPDL
  3. Tim Trent with CraftLab
  4. Mohsen Moghaddam with VR/AR/XR Maker Spaces
  5. Abigale Stangl with Inclusive Makerspaces for Users with Physical Challenges
  6. Julie Linsey with Impact of Makerspaces on Education

1:45-3:00PM Roundtable Discussions

Join the discussion and help brainstorm how to elevate the maker culture across campus! What opportunities will enhance synergy, build/expand, and conduct/fund educational research around making?

TechMade Symposia

Friday, December 13th, 2024
11:00-1:00PM
Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute Classroom 114

Celebrate the end of term and join us at the next TechMade symposia where you will hear from Graduate Student Speakers from the College of Engineering and the College of Design about their current research and collaborate with the community on a hands-on design activity all while enjoying lunch!

The event is open to anyone interested in joining an interdisciplinary campus community focused on design across disciplines. Food and drinks will be provided during the event.

About TechMade

TechMade is a new initiative unifying design experiences and serving all students across campus with the goal of (1) building an engineering design community on campus, (2) strengthening engineering design curriculum, and (3) expanding infrastructure of makerspaces. Learn how we can create an ecosystem that weaves together existing opportunities and strengthen student backgrounds and experiences.

Lightning Talks

Hear from two graduate students from the Colleges of Engineering and Design about their current research.

Fun Activity

Bring your unique background and experiences and work collaboratively with other attendees on a fun activity!

Inaugural TechMade Symposia

Friday, October 25th, 2024
4:00-5:30PM
Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute Classroom 114

You are cordially invited to the inaugural TechMade symposia where you will…

  • Learn about TechMade as an interdisciplinary and collaborative design community
  • Hear from TechMade Research Fellows, Taylor Allen and Madison Hales, about their current research
  • Ideate with the community during a hands-on design activity

The event is open to the Georgia Tech community interested in learning about and joining TechMade. Food and drinks will be provided during the event, and prizes will be awarded during the design activity.

“TechMade will be an opportunity in the long term to give any Georgia Tech student exposure to hands-on designing, building, making, and product realization in a meaningful way”
– Dr. Carolyn Seepersad in TechMade: Building an Interdisciplinary Design Community

Lightning Talks

Hear from TechMade Research Fellows, Taylor Allen and Madison Hales, about their current research

Taylor Allen, Mechanical Engineering PhD student
Learn about Taylor’s research in optimizing assistive technology design — work driven by a desire to design and fabricate products to make life easier for people with disabilities. How can we remove barriers to “preclude inventors from developing robust, affordable products?”

Madison Hales, Robotics PhD student
Check out Madison’s research of the roots of rice plants to understand how they respond to environmental stimuli and grow in the soil. Can the strategies plants use to move and grow in a complex medium like soil inform designs for robots that are able to operate in highly unstructured environments?

Design Activity

Let’s tackle problems together! Bring your unique background and experiences and work collaboratively with other attendees to design creative, interdisciplinary solutions. There will be prizes 😉
